The Curse of Black Diamonds
Real natural black diamonds are very rare. Only one of every 100,000
jewels that are mined have a black color. Unfortunately black
diamond rings come with a bit of a bad reputation. This is thanks to
diamond stolen from a statue of a deity called the Eye of Brahma.
"The Eye of Brahma" is probably the most famous black diamond in
history. This enormous 195 carat black stone is centuries old and is
said to be haunted. The curse is the result of the diamond being
stolen from a Hindu shrine in southern India. The last three owners
of the diamond apparently killed themselves. In the past few years
this diamond was recut into three separate gems and so far nobody
who has owned one of these three pieces of "The Eye of Brahma" has
died since 1947. The actress Felicity Huffman even considered
wearing one of these pieces of the original "Eye of Brahma" diamond
to the Oscars but changed her mind at the last minute, perhaps
rethinking her skepticism of the age-old curse.
Natural black diamonds are very defective as any diamond that has a
detectable hue to it has a lot of impurities or structural defects.
It is highly unlikely that you will find a real natural black
diamond in a jewelry store. Most of the black diamond rings and so
forth that are mass marketed are stones that have been dyed or
heat-treated to disguise their flaws. In essence it is a way of
marketing inferior grade diamonds as valuable gemstones.
