The Yellow, Green or Blue Diamond Engagement Ring

Many people don't realize this but diamonds come in many other colors besides white. This means it is possible to have a red or blue diamond engagement ring as opposed to the traditional virginal white version. Most icy white diamonds are created from pure carbon that was compressed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. However some diamonds have traces of elements other than carbon or have experienced changes in pressure during the compression process. This is what gives colored diamonds, also known as fancy diamonds their unique hues.

Geologically there are three groups of colored diamonds - the yellow, orange and brown diamonds, the blue red or pink colored diamonds and the green diamonds.

Diamonds that are yellow, orange and brown absorbed blue light from nitrogen when they were forming. The browner the diamond, the more nitrogen there was around during its creation. Yellow diamonds are very popular right now, especially the cheaper ones which come in shades like cognac or wine.

You have by now probably seen the gorgeous examples pink or blue diamond engagement ring. The stones in these rings are also anomalies. Diamonds that are red or pink have what is known as twisted carbons. Instead of absorbing light they reflect it. Blue diamonds are formed when the element boron somehow chemically enters the picture when they are formed.

The rarest color of diamond is green. Green diamonds result as the result of being exposed to nuclear radiation. Most green diamonds in existence are in museums and you are not likely to find one at your local jeweler's.
