Blue Sapphire Necklace Styles
For decades, the sapphire necklace has been associated with the very
wealthy and respected. Especially when combined with diamonds the
wearing blue sapphire jewellery has always been a statement that you
"belong to the upper class." This is because for centuries sapphires
were too expensive to be owned by ordinary mortals and usually ended
up in the possession of eccentric movie stars. A good example was
Mary Pickford, America's Sweetheart, who owned the precious Star of
India sapphire and wore it every day like most people wear a pair of
slippers.
The design image of the blue sapphire necklace has always been a bit
frumpy. This is thanks to the Queen of England who has a very staid
image and boasts many of them in her crown jewels. Another person
with a cooler, more dowdy personality who owned a lot of sapphires
was Joan Crawford who wore her spectacular jewels to board meetings
when she became chairwoman of Pepsi Cola in her later years.
However things have really changes since the first part of the 20h
century when tiny little icy diamond chips glittered beside tiny
marquise cut sapphires in thick chunky collar like necklaces. The
design of the modern blue sapphire necklace is more likely to
feature stones that are larger or a tear drop gemstone on a delicate
gold or tassel like chain.
Another factor that is chipping away at the formerly staid and
formal reputation of the sapphire is the fact that yellow, pink,
orange and green sapphires are finding their way into every aspect
of jewelry design. The blue sapphire necklace will always be more
formal in its appearance. Not so with the pink or yellow sapphire
necklace. It is now quite common to find sapphire necklaces that use
multi colored sapphires to create bold sunflower and daisy pendants.
This is good news for the more youthful set who can now wear a
quality sapphire without having to save it to wear to a formal
occasion.
