Imitation Diamond Earrings

Is it better to buy imitation diamond earrings or should you buy the real thing? This all depends on how much you are planning to spend. One good thing about buying the imitations is that if you lose one diamond earring it does not cost you a fortune to replace it.

There are several different brands of imitation diamonds on the market today. Two of the most popular are Diamonelle and Nexus diamonds. Don't get the impression that these imitation diamond stones are inexpensive. Even synthetic stones can be quite expensive. The payoff is that you can get larger stones for your diamond jewelry for a lower price.

Cubic Zirconia, a precious gem on to itself does a fair job of imitating a diamond. The only difference (aside from value) is that the stone may feel a lot heavier to people who wear diamond earings than real diamonds. Cubic zirconia used to be found naturally but the resources are depleted. Nowadays these gem stones are created in a lab rotary.
A similar natural gemstone is Moissanite. Sometimes you can also buy pure white quartz that has many similar properties to a diamond. In fact one type of quartz that is sometimes used to make imitation diamond earrings is called the Herkimer diamond.

The one sure way to find out the difference between an imitation and a natural diamond earring is to draw a line with a black marker on a piece of paper and place the gem on top of it. If you can see the line through the gemstone it is a synthetic diamond.
