Fame and The Diamond and Emerald Necklace

The diamond and emerald necklace has always been a luxury that seems to scream wealth and sophistication. More than just a bauble these expensive necklaces have often been worn, cherished and celebrated by celebrities with interesting histories.

Although most people associate actress Elizabeth Taylor with collecting large diamonds, she also collected quite a few other jeweled masterpieces made out of other kinds of precious gem stones. One of her most prized possessions was a diamond and emerald necklace that she made by transforming a diamond and emerald brooch into a pendant. Her husband Richard Burton gave her this famous emerald pendant as a wedding present. Some of the emeralds used in this necklace originally belonged to the Grand Duchess Vladimir of Russia.

Another Hollywood actress who had a passion for the diamond and emerald necklace was silent screen star Gloria Swanson. She often spent $500,000 a year on diamond and emerald jewelry. One of her most treasured possessions was an amethyst, diamond and emerald necklace by the designer Iribe. She also wore this diamond and emerald necklace, which featured a large pendant in the movie " Affairs of Anotole" in 1920.

The most spectacular diamond and emerald necklace in the world are in the National Gem Collection in the Smithsonian Institute. This 167.97-carat emerald pendant, called the Mackay Emerald was mined in Muzo, Columbia. The gem is believed to be the largest cut emerald in the world and it is set in an Art Deco diamond and platinum necklace designed by Cartier Inc. In 1931, the wealthy Clarence H. Mackay presented this spectacular diamond and emerald necklace as a wedding gift to his opera singer wife, Anna Case, who was a diva of the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1909 to 1920.
