Famous Diamond Necklaces
Throughout history diamond necklaces have intrigued everyone from
jewel thieves to royalty to film directors.
Perhaps the most famous diamond necklace is the Hope Diamond. A
merchant traveler originally sold it to King Louis XIV of France in
1668. This diamond is 112 3/16 carats and boasts an unusual violet
color. It has since been passed down through several wealthy and
eccentric collectors including Mrs. Evalyn Walsh McLean who in 1911
had the huge stone set into a diamond necklace that consists of
three circlets of large white diamonds. The Hope Diamond is
frequently showcased in many traveling museum exhibitions.
Another fantastically large diamond necklace is known as the Patalia
necklace. This necklace features the seventh largest faceted diamond
in the world, weighing 234.65. In 1928 the jeweler Cartier also set
this diamond as a pendant in the glittering diamond necklace.
Currently this most spectacular of diamond necklaces is owned by
anonymous residents of Israel who also lend it for educational
purposes to museum exhibitions
Another famous necklace is the Heart of the Ocean which is a heart
shaped diamond pendant surrounded by white diamonds on a necklace.
This was the necklace that was featured in the movie The Titanic.
This fake diamond necklace inspired many genuine imitations
including a necklace ordered up by Celine Dion that featured a large
fine heart shaped pendant shaped like a heart in sapphire. This
necklace later sold for $1 million. This is one of the few cases
where a valuable diamond necklace was inspired by a fake movie prop.
