Radiant, Cushion and Emerald Cut Diamonds
Diamonds can be faceted into all kinds of different cuts. Here is a
brief guide to the different types of faceted shapes including the
emerald cut diamond, radiant cut diamonds and cushion type diamonds.
Brilliant - The brilliant cut diamond is found in all kinds of
different shapes including oval cut diamonds, radiant cut diamonds,
princesses, hearts, marquises and pear shaped diamonds. The
brilliant cut is not a shape, but rather a type of cut in which all
of the facets of the stone appear to originate from the center of
the stone and radiate out to its edges.
Cabochon - This type of stone is not cut at all and it is rare to
find a diamond cut this way. This is a stone with a rounded surface,
rather than facets. The shape is often a half dome and most common
in translucent stones such as opals, moonstones and garnets.
Cushion Cut - Stones with this cut are shaped like cushions. They
have a square shape that has rounded or beveled edges. The facets of
cushion cut diamonds also appear to radiate out from the center of
the stone.
Emerald Cut - The emerald cut diamond has a square or rectangular
shape with sharp cut corners. Three concentric rows of steps are cut
around the perimeters of the stone to increase its brilliance. The
fact that these facets look like descending stairs has given the
emerald cut diamond the nickname of "step cut" diamond.
European Cut - This type of cut is older and existed before special
machines were invented for precision cutting stones. This cut has a
round perimeter and a very flat top. Usually the flat top of the
stone is a lot larger than the base of the stone. The European cut
is more likely to be accomplished through the artistry and precision
of a human hand rather than a machine.
