Antique Emerald Engagement Ring Styles
The emerald engagement ring is found in more retro reproduction
styles than other rings possibly because it has gone through several
periods of being in fashion in the last century. There are three
major historical periods of style that the design of emerald wedding
jewelry still mimics today.
The first retro emerald engagement ring style is called Art Nouveau
and was in fashion between 1890 and 1918. These feminine flowing
ring designs featured butterflies, flowers, twining vines, snakes
and dragonflies as motifs. Emerald wedding jewelry was often
fashioned in the shape of flowers with pearls, garnets and diamonds
defining gem stone petals surrounded by jeweled leafs made of
marquise cut emeralds.
The second retro emerald engagement ring style is from the Edwardian
period of history from 1901 to 1915. These delicate engagement ring
designs featured intricate, lacy pyramids of stacked precious gems
such as emeralds, corals, carnelians and rubies. Tiny emeralds were
often entwined with diamonds and pearls in wedding bands that looked
like a circlet of delicate brambles.
The third style is from what is called the Retro period which
historians say runs from 1935 to 1950. In terms of emerald wedding
jewelry the style made bolder, squarer and oblong gems framed by
thicker gold or silver rims into focus. Everything was oversized and
emerald engagement rings were worn interchangeably as cocktail
rings.
