Common Myths about Opal Jewellery

As opal is one of the most fragile and mysterious stones there has been a lot of myths spring up around it and in particularly around the care of opal jewellery. Here are some of the more common misconceptions about opal pendants, rings and other adornments that should be dispelled

Perhaps one of the most common myths about opal jewellery is that it must soaked in water or it loses its luster. Although it is true that opals glow are more luminous when it is humid, soaking in water won't do much to improve its glow. Most opals are covered with a resin that protects it from water damage. However an opal with an iron backing can be severely damaged if the water seeps in and rusts the metal.

Another myth is that an opal will crack if it is taken to a high altitude. This is why some people won't wear their opal pendant or ring on a plane. Heat and light crack opals, not height or depth.

Some people also believe that rubbing your opal with cream or oil will keep it lustrous. This is actually a bad idea as it may cause some fogging of the stone. Mineral oil is especially bad to rub on the stone of an opal pendant, ring or earring.

Another myth is that putting your opal out in a lightening storm will enhance its brightness. A polish with a moist cloth is more likely to do this than exposing the gem stone to Mother Nature's violence.
