Famous Diamond and Ruby Necklaces
Diamond ruby necklaces seem to be the favorite promotional tool of
designers and big jewelry companies that really want to celebrate
their business by putting out a limited edition design. A good
example of this type of promotion were the three diamond and ruby
necklaces worth millions that were created by the watch company
Movado to celebrate the opening of a patriotic U.S. musical called
"Stars and Stripes."
Diamond and ruby necklaces have also been used for self-promotion as
well. Richard Burton gave one of the most famous diamond ruby
necklaces to Elizabeth Taylor for her 40th birthday. 1972 Richard
Burton gave her a heart-shaped diamond known as the Taj-Mahal. The
stone is fairly large and flat, with an Arabic inscription on either
side. It is set with rubies and smaller diamonds in a yellow rope of
gold. Shortly afterwards on November 12th, Miss Taylor wore this
most spectacular of diamond and ruby necklaces to Princess Grace's
40th birthday party in Monaco. It was flown from New York to Nice,
Italy in the company of two armed security guards. In 1978,
following her divorce from Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor sold the
diamond for five million and used the money to build a hospital in
Botswana.
The diamond and ruby necklace is also the trendiest token of
affection for the young and reckless nouveau riche. A good example
of this type of indulgence is the diamond ruby necklace that was
given to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham by her famous soccer
player husband David Beckham. It is worth 1.2 million pounds (almost
2.5 million U.S. dollars!) This is one of the most expensive of
diamond and ruby necklaces given as a present from a man to a woman
in history.
