The Sophistication of Sterling Silver Rings With Rubies

When most people think of rubies they often don't think of sterling silver. This is because for many years, gold rings with rubies were much more fashionable then sterling silver rings with rubies. However back then rubies with pinker or more fiery hues were more common as the majority of rubies back then came from mines in Ceylon (now known as the country of Sri Lanka) These stones had very warm tones and flashed gold and pink so they were very complimentary to being set in gold settings.

However that mine has since dried up and the main sources of rubies in the world are from Burma, Thailand and Vietnam. Burma still produces blood red and bright pink settings that look great in a gold setting. Rubies from Thailand on the other hand have a chocolate brown black flash to them that is known as "extinction." Rubies from Vietnam have a bluish or purple hue that is reminiscent of Indian ink. The fluorescence of these gems is more suited to sterling silver jewelry.

This is why when you go shopping for rubies you are more likely to find sterling silver rings with rubies as well as a sterling silver chain, as opposed to a gold chain, in a ruby necklace. It is also more common to see ruby pendants clasped in prongs of silver rather than gold especially if the gems originated from Thailand or Vietnam.

There are some purists who would say that sterling silver rings with rubies look a little tacky and others that would say they look more hip and less than pretentious than gold ruby rings. It is probably true that wearing a sterling silver ring set with rubies is more suited to a casual or youthful look.
