The History of the Sapphire Necklace

Perhaps the most famous sapphire necklace is the one that was found at the bottom of the sea in the ruins of the Titanic. It is featured in an exhibition currently traveling around the world called Titanic: The World Class Collection. This tourism museum exhibition features artifacts found in the infamous luxury passenger liner. The real life sapphire necklace has a white gold diamond and sapphire heart pendant just like the one in the movie Titanic by James Cameron. It was director Cameron who nick named the "Jewel of the Sea." In real life this gem belonged to a 19 year old shop assistant named Kate Florence Philips who was eloping on the Titanic to America with her boss who was a renowned jeweler. She was one of the survivors of the infamous sea disaster.

Another very famous sapphire necklace now resides in the Smithsonian. It is called the Bismark Sapphire Necklace. The 98.6-carat deep blue sapphire pendant which is attached to a diamond and platinum necklace was designed by Cartier. The huge gemstone was found and excavated in Sri Lanka. The piece was a gift to the Smithsonian Institute by its owner, the German Countess Mona von Bismark, in 1967.

Equally stupendous is the Gordon Sapphire necklace which originally belonged to Ada Gordon. Her family founded Gordon's Jewelers. This amazing diamond and sapphire necklace features an emerald-cut sapphire weighing approximately 50.00 carats. It also features a bejeweled white gold setting with 10 marquise-shaped, 26 pear-shaped, 7 round and 25 baguette diamonds. The supplementary decorative jewels alone are a combined weight of y 14.50 carats. The chain of the necklace is set set with 51 round, 56 marquise-shaped and 4 pear-shaped diamonds that weigh a grand total of 22.50 carats. The estimated worth of this famous sapphire necklace is about $70,000.

Another priceless gold and sapphire necklace is in the Metropolitan Museum and is called the Nike Sapphire necklace. The necklace features a flat braid of gold with a star sapphire set in a Greek medallion and dates back before the time of Christ. The Museum raises money for itself by selling replicas of this famous sapphire antiquity.
