The Unique Gemstone Jewelry of the Early Film Era
The world's most unique gemstone jewelry was collected by some of
the most famous silent and early film stars. In most cases these
jewels were given to them as gifts from admirers, possibly because
their own personal qualities were as beautiful and rare as some of
the stones.
Mary Pickford, America's sweetheart, was never depicted on film
wearing anything but a simple strand of pearls. However off-screen
she was a big collector of rare rubies and star sapphires. She was
the owner of both the 60-carat Star of Bombay and the 200-carat Star
of India.
Marlene Dietrich wore pieces from her own extensive collection of
dramatic gold and silver gem stone jewelry set with huge cabochon
emeralds in many of her movies. Gloria Swanson was also a big fan of
emeralds and spent $500,000 a year on her passion for unique gold
and silver gem stone jewelry set with the precious glittering
stones.
Many film stars collected sapphires. Joan Crawford was so known for
her love of the glittering blue stones that jewelers began to
nickname the stones "Joan Blue." She owned a bracelet set with three
star sapphires that weighed between 57 and 74 carats each as well as
a 70-carat engagement ring and a 72-carat emerald cut sapphire. Her
passion for collecting unique gemstone jewelry was not limited to
Joan Blues. She also owned a 75 carat amethyst ring and an enormous
100-carat citrine ring.
Joan Harlow was also passionate about sapphires and to seal their
engagement her fiancé William Powell bought her a whopping 150-carat
cabochon sapphire. You can see this gem on her finger in her last
movie, "Saratoga" which was filmed in 1937.
